The extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold is a biomaterial derived from the non-cellular component of tissues, designed to support tissue regeneration and repair. It consists of a complex three-dimensional network of structural proteins (such as collagens), glycosaminoglycans, and other bioactive molecules that provide both mechanical support and biochemical cues essential for cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. ECM scaffolds can be sourced from decellularized tissues—removing cellular components while preserving the native architecture and bioactivity—or engineered synthetically to mimic these properties.
