Extracellular matrix scaffolds for wound healing are acellular biomaterials, typically derived from decellularized tissues such as dermis, small intestine submucosa, or amniotic membrane, designed to mimic the natural ECM’s three-dimensional structure and bioactivity. Upon implantation, these scaffolds provide a supportive environment for host cell infiltration, migration, and proliferation, facilitate angiogenesis and granulation tissue formation, and modulate immune responses by promoting anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative macrophage phenotypes. ECM scaffolds are widely used for chronic wound management, burn repair, and tissue engineering but are not molecular drug targets; rather, they serve as advanced wound dressings and tissue engineering materials.
Provides a structural substrate for cell ingrowth, migration, and attachment. Releases bioactive molecules after degradation. Modulates local immune response (promotes M2 macrophage phenotype, Th2 response). Acts as a reservoir for growth factors and bioactive proteins.
