Overview

Extracellular matrix (ECM) structural proteins are a group of macromolecules that form the essential scaffold surrounding and supporting cells within tissues and organs. These proteins provide mechanical strength and regulate cell behavior, tissue development, and homeostasis. Key structural proteins include collagens, elastin, fibronectin, laminins, and tenascins. They mediate signaling through interactions with receptors like integrins, discoidin domain receptors and syndecans. Mutations or dysregulation can lead to various diseases and ECM remodeling is central to cancer progression, metastasis, wound healing and fibrosis.
