Overview

Extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis refers to the cellular processes responsible for producing and assembling the complex network of macromolecules that form the ECM. The ECM is a non-cellular, three-dimensional scaffold present in all tissues and organs, providing structural support as well as essential biochemical and biomechanical cues that regulate cell behavior, tissue morphogenesis, differentiation, and homeostasis. Key components synthesized include fibrous proteins (collagen, elastin, reticulin), glycoproteins (fibronectin, laminin), proteoglycans, and polysaccharides (hyaluronic acid). The synthesis process involves intracellular production, secretion, and assembly/aggregation. Abnormalities in extracellular matrix synthesis are implicated in numerous diseases.
