Biofilm

Molecular classification
Complex Microbial Community, Extracellular Matrix
01

Overview

A biofilm is an aggregate of microorganisms in which cells adhere to each other and often to a surface, embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). This matrix acts as a scaffold, providing structural stability and protection for the microbial community. Biofilms can form on both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) surfaces in diverse environments.

Mechanism of action

N/A. Biofilm is a complex structure, not a single molecule with a specific mechanism of action. Anti-biofilm agents target various aspects of biofilm formation or disrupt the EPS matrix.
