Overview

Extracellular sodium concentration refers to the amount of sodium ions (Na⁺) present in the extracellular fluid (ECF), which includes plasma and interstitial fluid. Sodium is the most abundant cation in this compartment and plays a critical role in maintaining osmotic balance, fluid volume, and electrical gradients across cell membranes. It is tightly regulated by renal function and hormonal control. Imbalances have significant clinical effects on brain function due to shifts in cellular hydration state.
