Target intelligence / Profile preview
The extracellular space refers to the area outside the plasma membranes of cells in multicellular organisms. It is filled with interstitial fluid, dissolved substances, and structural components like the extracellular matrix (ECM). It acts as a medium for transport, provides structural support via ECM components, and serves as a reservoir for bioactive molecules. Its properties are determined by both soluble contents (fluid phase) and insoluble scaffolding elements provided by various macromolecules assembled into matrices around/between cells.
