Molecular classification
Vesicle, Extracellular Vesicle

Overview

Exosomes are small, membrane-bound extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by most eukaryotic cells, typically ranging from 30 to 150 nanometers in diameter. They originate from the endosomal compartment of cells and are released into the extracellular environment through exocytosis. Exosomes carry a diverse array of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, and mediate intercellular communication, influence recipient cell behavior, participate in immune responses, and serve as biomarkers for disease diagnosis. Engineered exosomes are being explored for therapeutic applications, such as drug and gene delivery.
