Extrinsic stains on enamel surface are discolorations that occur on the outermost layer of the tooth (enamel) due to the deposition of pigments from external sources such as coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, certain foods, and some medications. These stains are typically superficial, affecting only the enamel, and can often be removed or lightened by mechanical cleaning (scaling, polishing, abrasive toothpaste) or chemical bleaching agents.
