Target intelligence / Profile preview
Exudate removal from the wound bed is a clinical procedure and principle in wound management rather than a molecular target. The goal is to manage the amount and type of wound exudate—a complex mixture of water, electrolytes, growth factors, inflammatory mediators, leukocytes, enzymes (notably proteases), and cellular debris—produced during the inflammatory and proliferative phases of healing. Excess exudate is common in chronic, non-healing wounds and contains higher levels of destructive enzymes and inflammatory molecules that impede tissue repair by degrading growth factors and extracellular matrix proteins. Removal is achieved using wound dressings with absorptive, antimicrobial, and enzymatic properties, or by active methods such as negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Proper exudate management promotes a moist wound environment necessary for optimal healing, while excessive fluid may cause tissue maceration, increase infection risk, and delay repair; insufficient removal leads to accumulation of harmful substances. Exudate management is a central pillar of modern wound care but is not a receptor, enzyme, or canonical molecular entity.
Absorption and sequestration of exudate using specialized dressings (hydrocolloid, foam, superabsorbent); Proteolytic enzymatic debridement (e.g., collagenase); Active evacuation (NPWT) reduces fluid, bacteria, inflammatory mediators; Modulates local protease activity and inflammation by removing excess exudate
