Overview

The eyelid margin is a specialized anatomical structure representing the transition zone between the external skin of the eyelid and the internal palpebral conjunctiva (StatPearls, 2023). It plays a critical role in ocular health by housing the Meibomian glands, which secrete the essential lipid layer of the tear film to prevent evaporation and maintain ocular surface lubrication (NIH/NEI, 2023). While not a single molecular target, the eyelid margin is a primary site for pharmacological intervention in conditions such as blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) (American Academy of Ophthalmology, 2023). Therapeutic strategies often involve topical antibiotics like Azithromycin, anti-inflammatory agents like Cyclosporine, and lubricants to manage bacterial overgrowth and chronic inflammation (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Understanding its complex anatomy and physiology is vital for treating ocular surface diseases that can lead to significant discomfort and visual impairment.

Mechanism of action

Pharmacological agents applied to the eyelid margin typically function by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, reducing T-cell mediated inflammation via calcineurin inhibition, or antagonizing lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) to decrease inflammatory cell recruitment (StatPearls, 2023; Mayo Clinic, 2023).
