F1 Capsular Antigen of Yersinia pestis (F1 antigen)

Target
F1 antigen
Molecular classification
Capsular Polysaccharide, Virulence Factor, Protein
01

Overview

The F1 capsular antigen is a major surface component of *Yersinia pestis*. It forms a capsule-like structure around the bacterium, which is highly expressed at mammalian body temperature. The primary function of the F1 antigen is to inhibit phagocytosis by host immune cells, particularly macrophages. It achieves this by interfering with complement-mediated opsonization, thereby helping *Y. pestis* evade innate immune responses during infection. Detection of circulating F1 antigen serves as an important diagnostic marker for plague.
