Thrombin (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease
01

Overview

Thrombin, also known as coagulation factor IIa, is a serine protease enzyme that plays a central role in the blood coagulation cascade. It is responsible for converting soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin strands, which are essential for clot formation and hemostasis. It also activates platelets and other coagulation factors, amplifying the clotting process and is involved in wound healing.

Mechanism of action

Thrombin inhibitors directly or indirectly block the activity of thrombin, preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin and subsequent clot formation.
