Overview

Coagulation factor V (Factor V, proaccelerin, or labile factor) is a glycoprotein that plays a dual role in the blood coagulation system, acting as both a procoagulant and an anticoagulant. It is essential for thrombin generation and is regulated by activated protein C (APC). The Factor V Leiden mutation, a common cause of thrombophilia, results in resistance to APC inactivation, increasing the risk of blood clots.

Mechanism of action

Factor V is a cofactor in the prothrombinase complex, essential for thrombin generation. Activated Protein C (APC), with Protein S, degrades/inactivates Factor Va.
