Factor XIIIa, also known as fibrin-stabilizing factor or FXIIIa, is the active form of Factor XIII, a transglutaminase enzyme crucial for blood coagulation. It catalyzes the formation of covalent crosslinks between fibrin molecules in blood clots, thereby stabilizing them and making them resistant to premature breakdown (fibrinolysis). Beyond hemostasis, FXIIIa plays roles in wound healing by promoting fibroblast proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. It also participates in angiogenesis during embryonic development and tissue repair processes.
Crosslinking fibrins via ε-(γ-glutamyl)lysyl bonds, strengthening clots and making them resistant to fibrinolysis.
