Fallopian tube

01

Overview

The **fallopian tube** is a pair of slender, hollow tubular structures that are essential components of the female reproductive system, connecting the ovaries to the uterus. Each tube, measuring approximately 10–13 cm in length, is divided into four main parts: infundibulum (with fimbriae), ampulla, isthmus, and the intramural (interstitial) segment[1][2][3][5]. The primary biological functions of the fallopian tube include capturing the egg at ovulation, serving as the site where fertilization by sperm usually occurs, and transporting the fertilized egg (embryo) to the uterus[1][2][3][5][6]. The mucosal lining provides nutrients and ciliary movement, while muscular layers facilitate peristaltic transport. Conditions affecting the fallopian tube, such as blockages, infections, or abnormalities, are major contributors to female infertility, and can also cause ectopic pregnancies or, rarely, malignancies[1][2][4][5].
