Overview

The Fallopian tube epithelium lines the interior of the fallopian tubes, which connect the ovaries to the uterus and provide the site for fertilization. This specialized epithelial layer is primarily composed of ciliated cells (which facilitate ovum transport), secretory cells (which provide a nutritive environment for gametes and early embryos), and less abundant peg and basal cells (thought to include stem-like or progenitor cell populations). The epithelium is hormonally regulated and undergoes cyclic changes during the menstrual cycle. Recent research has implicated fallopian tube epithelial cells, especially secretory cells, as the probable cell of origin for most high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas. While individual molecular components of the epithelium (like PAX8 or FOXJ1) are studied as biomarkers, the epithelium itself is a tissue structure, not a molecular target[2][3][4][5][8].
