FAM13A antisense RNA 1 (FAM13A-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the FAM13A locus. FAM13A-AS1 does not code for a protein but regulates cellular processes through interactions with microRNAs and other RNAs. It acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), such as sponging miR-141-3p to upregulate NEK6 expression in renal cell carcinoma, thereby promoting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and inhibiting apoptosis[2]. Elevated expression of FAM13A-AS1 has been associated with poor prognosis and advanced tumor features in several cancers, including renal cell carcinoma and cervical cancer[2][3]. It is emerging as a potential biomarker and possible therapeutic target in oncology, although no direct small-molecule or antibody drugs currently target this lncRNA[2][6]. FAM13A-AS1 is primarily cytoplasmic, regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally by interacting with specific microRNAs, and is implicated in multiple tumorigenic processes and potentially other disease pathways[2][3][6].
