It is transcribed from the opposite strand to the FAM167A gene and is classified as an lncRNA, meaning it does not code for protein but can regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally and epigenetically. Several pathogenic alleles and variants have been identified, with associations to diseases such as glioma susceptibility and osteonecrosis of the jaw.
