Overview

FAM181A antisense RNA 1 (FAM181A-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand relative to the FAM181A gene and located on human chromosome 14. It does not encode a protein but appears to regulate gene expression and cellular processes via regulatory RNA mechanisms, such as acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (“sponge”) for microRNAs. FAM181A-AS1 has been identified as a potential prognostic biomarker in several cancers, notably glioma (where it promotes tumor growth by sponging miR-129-5p and upregulating ZRANB2 expression) and lung adenocarcinoma (where low expression correlates with poorer survival and altered immune infiltration). Its functions include potential involvement in the regulation of the cell cycle, DNA repair, chromatin modification, immune cell infiltration, and cellular senescence. There is no evidence that FAM181A-AS1 is a therapeutic target for drugs or that it is considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or typical pharmacological target[1][2][3].
