Family-18 chitinases are enzymes classified within the glycoside hydrolase family 18 (GH18), a large group of proteins found across archaea, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes. These enzymes primarily catalyze the hydrolysis of β-1,4-glycosidic bonds in chitin. They are involved in diverse physiological roles depending on the organism, including tissue remodeling, immune response regulation, and pathogenesis. Notable human GH18 members include chitotriosidase (CHIT1), acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase), CHI3L1/YKL40, and CHI3L2/YKL39.
