Its protein contains a conserved N-terminal domain (DUF1151) with unclear molecular function, and a unique C-terminal region, contributing to a low molecular weight form known as heat shock-inducible tumor small protein (HITS). Expression of FAM107B is notably reduced or lost in various cancers, with evidence supporting its role as a candidate tumor suppressor gene. FAM107B is highly conserved across species and has a paralog (FAM107A) with related but distinct biological actions.
