Overview

Family with sequence similarity 157 member A (FAM157A) is a gene that encodes a putative protein with uncertain molecular function. FAM157A is broadly expressed in human tissues and produces four reported protein isoforms, the longest of which is a 257-amino acid plasma membrane-associated protein. This protein has been reported to interact with other proteins such as SLC3A2 and GGTL3B, suggesting a potential link to amino acid transport and glutathione metabolism. FAM157A expression is tightly regulated by cell density and hypoxic conditions, and is under post-transcriptional control. Its role in cancer is controversial, with both pro- and anti-tumorigenic effects suggested depending on context and cancer type.\nFAM157A is classified as a long non-coding RNA gene by several genomic databases. There is no established evidence that FAM157A functions as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or recognized therapeutic target. No interacting drugs, mechanism of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns have been reported for this protein. The target is often subject to uncertainty in functional annotation, and there is some history of misannotation (e.g., previously annotated as GTF2IP18).
