Overview

FAM161B is a member of the FAM161 protein family, which includes centrosomal and centriolar components highly conserved in vertebrates. FAM161B is homologous to FAM161A, a well-studied protein implicated in the structural integrity and scaffolding of centrioles and transition zones in ciliated cells. While FAM161B's specific function is not delineated in humans, by analogy to FAM161A, it likely participates in the organization and stability of the microtubule-based structures within the centriole or centrosome. No disease associations, interacting drugs, or use as a classic therapeutic target are currently reported for FAM161B. Its best-characterized role—by homology and classification—is as a cytoskeletal-associated centrosomal protein.
