Overview

Family with sequence similarity 162 member A (FAM162A) is a mitochondrial protein that promotes intrinsic apoptosis, particularly in response to hypoxic stress. FAM162A interacts with hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and plays a critical role in the regulation of apoptosis by triggering mitochondrial release of cytochrome c, activation of caspase-9/3, and, in neuronal cells, promoting the release of AIFM1 for caspase-independent cell death. It is implicated in pathological processes associated with hypoxia, such as cerebral ischemia, myocardial infarction, and various cancers, and may serve as a diagnostic marker for early-stage cervical cancer due to its expression pattern. The protein contains two transmembrane domains required for mitochondrial localization and apoptotic function. There are currently no approved drugs or direct chemical inhibitors/activators known to target FAM162A[1][3][6][7].
