Family with sequence similarity 170 member A (FAM170A) is a zinc finger domain-containing protein that functions as a nuclear transcription factor. It is characterized by a C2H2 zinc finger motif, allowing it to bind DNA and regulate transcription[1][2][4][7]. It is highly conserved, testis-specific, and plays a crucial role in the chromatin remodeling process during sperm development, particularly in the exchange of histones for protamines required for sperm nuclear condensation[4][6]. FAM170A interacts with chromatin remodeling proteins (including USP7, lamin B1, PIWIL1, HSPA2, CSNK1A1), facilitates nuclear translocation of USP7, and enhances deubiquitination activity required for normal spermiogenesis[4]. Deficiency causes impaired chromatin remodeling, resulting in abnormal sperm morphology and male infertility[4][6]. FAM170A is endogenously expressed in a subset of human tissues, with particularly high levels in testis. It is not currently an established therapeutic target nor associated with any known drug interactions.
