Family with sequence similarity 19 member A1 (FAM19A1), also known as TAFA chemokine like family member 1, is a small secreted protein predominantly expressed in specific regions of the brain[1][2][3]. It is distantly related to the CC-chemokine family and is postulated to act as a brain-specific chemokine or neurokine involved in regulating immune and nervous cell function[1][2][3]. FAM19A1 serves as a ligand for the CMKLR2 receptor and is implicated in the modulation of neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation[2][4]. Mutations or dysregulation in this gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including lissencephaly 9 with complex brainstem malformation, and with certain forms of muscular dystrophy[2]. There are currently no drugs or established mechanisms of action directly targeting FAM19A1, nor is it considered a therapeutic receptor or conventional drug target at this time[2][3][4].
