Family with sequence similarity 237 member B (FAM237B)

Target
FAM237B
Molecular classification
Other (microprotein), possibly neurosecretory protein/hormone
01

Overview

Family with sequence similarity 237 member B (FAM237B) is a protein-coding gene originally misannotated as non-coding, now recognized as encoding a conserved secreted microprotein found across species including humans, mice, and chickens. FAM237B is expressed in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus and is implicated in appetite regulation; in mice, knockout or central administration studies demonstrated an orexigenic effect (increased feeding), consistent with findings in chickens. Molecularly, it may activate the GPR83 receptor via GNAQ signaling. Disease associations are minimal but include possible involvement in Stickler syndrome at the gene level. Despite detectable extracellular protein expression, its role as a human drug target is unestablished, and no drugs, biomarkers, or safety profiles are known.
