Overview

FAM27C (Family with sequence similarity 27 member C) is a human gene that produces a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), not a protein[3][9]. The FAM27 genomic locus had multiple predicted variants (such as FAM27A, FAM27B) that refer to highly similar or overlapping RNA transcripts, all ultimately classified as lncRNA rather than protein-coding[3][9]. There is currently no evidence that FAM27C encodes a protein or that it serves as a receptor, enzyme, or druggable therapeutic target. Its function, disease associations, and relevance to drug discovery are presently unknown or very poorly characterized. Most database entries now agree that FAM27C and its close variants refer to an RNA gene in the lncRNA class[3][9][7]. No structural, functional, or disease annotations typical of receptors, enzymes, or protein targets are available for FAM27C in major biomedical databases[3][5][7]. The use of aliases that suggest protein products or receptors is outdated and misleading. In summary, FAM27C is a poorly characterized lncRNA gene and does not currently qualify as a therapeutic target.
