As a pseudogene, it results from the duplication or mutation-inactivation of a parent coding gene and is thought to have lost the ability to produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes, including FAM3C2P, often retain high DNA sequence similarity to their functional counterparts but typically lack protein-coding capability due to frameshifts, truncations, or mutations[1][3][4].
