Family with sequence similarity 85 member B (FAM85B) is a human gene that encodes a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), also known as lncRNA-HEIM (“lncRNA Highly Expressed In Monocytes”)[3][8][9][7]. FAM85B is annotated as a non-protein-coding transcript and does not belong to any traditional receptor, enzyme, or transporter class. It has been detected at high levels in monocytes and is classified as a long non-coding RNA, indicating a likely role in post-transcriptional or transcriptional gene regulation rather than direct signaling or enzymatic activity[9][7][3]. There is some evidence linking FAM85B to human diseases, for example, an association with retinitis pigmentosa, but its molecular mechanisms and causative role remain to be clarified[9]. More broadly, genes belonging to the FAM (“family with sequence similarity”) group, including FAM85B, are now being investigated as potential players in cancer biology, but in most cases—including FAM85B—targets are not yet therapeutically actionable and have primarily descriptive or biomarker potential[12]. To date, there are no known drugs targeting FAM85B, and it does not appear to be used as a clinical biomarker. There is no available evidence describing ligand binding, protein interactions, or safety concerns related to modulation of this lncRNA. In summary, FAM85B is principally characterized as a lncRNA highly expressed in monocytes, with emerging, but as yet poorly defined, biological and pathological roles. It is not considered a canonical therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme, and current knowledge points to its primary classification as a noncoding RNA with regulatory potential in cell differentiation and perhaps cancer[9][12][8].
