Overview

FAM86C2P is an unprocessed pseudogene annotated as a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA). It is transcribed as a 13.7 kb RNA but not believed to encode a full-length functional protein. This locus may, in rare instances, be translated into a short peptide (131 amino acids), evolutionarily derived from the protein-coding Fam86 gene family, but several internal coding exons were lost through evolution so any peptide product would be truncated and structurally distinct from canonical Fam86 proteins[1][4][7][10]. FAM86C2P is localized to both cytoplasm and nucleus, and its precise function remains poorly understood, but recent studies report a potential tumor-promoting role in high-grade serous ovarian cancer by regulating pathways involving DNA repair (RNASEH2A) and translation (EEF2KMT, its parental homolog)[4]. FAM86C2P does not encode a classical druggable target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, nor are there any known drugs or validated mechanisms targeting this locus. It is best classified as a lncRNA/pseudogene with emerging but very limited functional evidence.
