Overview

Family with sequence similarity 9 member C (FAM9C) is a nuclear protein encoded by a gene on the X chromosome, sharing homology with the synaptonemal complex component SYCP3, and containing multiple nuclear localization signals[1][3][6]. It is expressed predominantly in the testis, where it may play a role in meiotic chromatin organization and recombination during spermatogenesis[1][3]. Evidence also implicates FAM9C as a cancer-testis antigen in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), where it is frequently upregulated and associated with enhanced cell proliferation, tumorigenicity, and inhibition of apoptosis via activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway[1]. There are no known drugs directly targeting FAM9C, nor is it well established as a therapeutic target. It may serve as a biomarker for certain cancers but currently lacks validated safety data or drug interaction evidence[1][3][6].
