Overview

Family with sequence similarity 90 member A1 (FAM90A1) is a primate-specific, protein-coding gene located mainly on chromosome 8p23.1 and is a member of the FAM90A gene family, which arose from segmental duplications in primate evolution[1][3]. FAM90A1 has nucleic acid binding annotation, suggesting a role in binding DNA or RNA, but its precise molecular function, biological role, and involvement in human disease are currently uncharacterized and remain largely unknown[1][4][5]. There are no established roles for FAM90A1 as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there known interacting drugs or biomarker applications[1][4][5][7]. FAM90A1's family, the FAM gene family, has members implicated in proliferation, invasion, migration, and drug resistance in cancers in a broader sense, but such associations have not been specifically demonstrated for FAM90A1 itself[2]. FAM90A1 is ubiquitous in expression but not considered tissue- or cell type-specific[8]. Current databases (GeneCards, UniProt, Open Targets Platform) note only very general functional annotations (protein/nucleic acid binding, unknown function)[1][4][5]. No evidence that FAM90A1 is a receptor, transporter, enzyme, or transcription factor; it is best classified generically as "other." Clinical and biological significance, druggability, and safety data are lacking for this molecule.
