Farnesyl Diphosphate Synthase (FDPS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the sequential condensation of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP) to form geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP), which then condenses with another IPP to produce farnesyl diphosphate (FPP). FPP is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of cholesterol, sterols, sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, carotenoids, coenzyme Q (ubiquinone), dolichol, abscisic acid in plants, plastoquinone, and farnesylated proteins. FDPS activity is inhibited by bisphosphonates, drugs commonly used to treat osteoporosis.
