FAS antisense RNA 1 (FAS-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the opposite strand of intron 1 of the human FAS gene on chromosome 10. It functions as a natural antisense transcript that regulates alternative splicing and expression of FAS gene isoforms, most notably by inhibiting RBM5-mediated exon 6 skipping, which in turn modulates production of the apoptotic sFas protein. FAS-AS1 regulation is implicated in the control of apoptosis and is relevant in various diseases, including certain lymphomas and autoimmune conditions. FAS-AS1 does not encode a protein and is not considered a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme, but its regulatory role in cell death pathways makes it of interest in pathogenesis and potential biomarker research
