Overview

FAS receptor (also known as Fas, APO-1, CD95, or TNFRSF6) is a cell surface death receptor that plays a central role in regulating programmed cell death (apoptosis), particularly within the immune system. Upon binding its ligand, FasL, it triggers a cascade of events leading to apoptosis. The Fas/FasL system has critical roles in immune homeostasis, terminating immune responses, and preventing autoimmunity and tumor development. Alterations or mutations affecting FAS function have been linked with autoimmune diseases and certain cancers.

Mechanism of action

Binding of Fas ligand (FasL) induces receptor trimerization, recruitment of adaptor proteins (FADD), formation of the Death-Inducing Signaling Complex (DISC), and activation of caspases leading to apoptosis.
