Overview

FAST kinase domain-containing protein 3, mitochondrial (FASTKD3), is a mitochondria-localized protein encoded by the FASTKD3 gene and part of the FASTK family. FASTKD3 contains an N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence, two kinase-like domains (FAST_1 and FAST_2), and a C-terminal RNA-binding domain (RAP). It plays a critical role in mitochondrial respiration by stabilizing and increasing the half-lives of specific mitochondrial mRNAs (e.g., MT-ND2, MT-ND3, MT-CYTB, MT-CO2, and MT-ATP8/6) and promoting their translation. FASTKD3 is required for maintaining cellular energy homeostasis, especially under stress conditions, and is most abundantly expressed in tissues with high mitochondrial content such as skeletal and cardiac muscle. While it interacts with multiple proteins involved in mitochondrial RNA processing, catabolism, translation, and energy production, FASTKD3 itself has no confirmed kinase activity and is not considered a classical therapeutic drug target or disease biomarker at present.
