Overview

FAST kinase domain-containing protein 5, mitochondrial (FASTKD5), is a mitochondrial RNA-binding protein that plays a critical role in the post-transcriptional processing of specific mitochondrial mRNA precursors, particularly those that are not flanked by tRNA genes in polycistronic transcripts. FASTKD5 is a member of the FASTK protein family and localizes to mitochondrial RNA granules, facilitating the maturation of non-canonical precursor mRNAs such as those encoding CO1, CO3, and CYB. Its function is essential for proper mitochondrial translation, complex IV assembly, and oxidative phosphorylation. Loss of FASTKD5 leads to profound mitochondrial translation defects and impaired bioenergetics, highlighting its pivotal regulatory role in mitochondrial gene expression and cell viability. There are currently no known drugs directly targeting FASTKD5, and it is not recognized as a therapeutic target. Deficiency or malfunction may contribute to certain mitochondrial diseases.
