Fast Skeletal Myosin

Molecular classification
Motor Protein, Enzyme, Actomyosin ATPase
01

Overview

Fast skeletal myosin is a molecular motor protein predominantly found in fast-twitch (type II) skeletal muscle fibers. It plays a central role in muscle contraction by converting chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanical force, enabling rapid and powerful movements characteristic of these muscle types. The molecule is composed of two heavy chains and four light chains. It interacts cyclically with actin filaments during muscle contraction and defects can result in congenital myopathies or disorders like distal arthrogryposis due to impaired contractile function.
