“Adipocyte metabolism” does not refer to a single molecule, protein, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or gene product. Instead, it encompasses the collective biochemical processes occurring within fat cells—primarily white and brown adipocytes—including energy storage as triglycerides during times of nutrient excess and mobilization through lipolysis when energy is needed by peripheral tissues.
