Overview

Fat storage-inducing transmembrane protein 1 (FITM1, FIT1) is an evolutionarily conserved integral membrane protein that plays a key role in the formation of lipid droplets, which are cellular organelles central to lipid and energy storage. FITM1 functions by binding diacylglycerol and triglycerides, partitioning newly synthesized triglycerides into lipid droplets without directly catalyzing triglyceride synthesis. It is predicted to localize primarily to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. While FITM1 has a role in fat storage and may contribute to cellular energy balance, it is not currently considered a primary therapeutic target, and there are no known drugs that act on this protein.
