The fat synthesis pathway, or fatty acid synthesis, is an anabolic process that produces fatty acids from smaller precursors, primarily acetyl-CoA. It occurs in the cytosol of liver, adipose tissue, and mammary glands. The pathway converts excess carbohydrates and proteins into fatty acids for energy storage as triglycerides. Key enzymes include acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FAS). Regulation involves allosteric and covalent modification, as well as hormonal control. Dysregulation can contribute to metabolic diseases.
