Fatty acid amide hydrolase 1 (FAAH1) is an integral membrane enzyme that hydrolyzes fatty acid amides, including the endocannabinoid anandamide and the sleep-inducing lipid oleamide. By breaking down these signaling molecules, FAAH1 terminates their biological activity, regulating processes like pain, inflammation, mood, appetite, and sleep. FAAH1 inhibitors are being explored for therapeutic use against chronic pain conditions and anxiety disorders.
Inhibition of FAAH1 increases levels of endogenous fatty acid amides like anandamide by preventing their degradation.
