The fatty acid beta-oxidation pathway is a central metabolic process by which fatty acids are broken down in cells to generate energy. This catabolic pathway occurs primarily in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells (and in the cytosol of prokaryotes) and involves sequential removal of two-carbon units from fatty acyl-CoA molecules, producing acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH₂. The acetyl-CoA produced then enters the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle for further oxidation and ATP generation.
