Target intelligence / Profile preview
Fatty acid-binding protein 12 (FABP12) is a member of the intracellular lipid-binding protein (iLBP) family, characterized by their ability to bind and transport fatty acids and other hydrophobic molecules within the cytoplasm, particularly in tissues active in fatty acid metabolism. FABP12 is one of the most recently identified human FABPs and has been shown to be present in human retinoblastoma cell lines, as well as rodent retina, testis, cerebral cortex, kidney, and epididymis[1][2][3]. Like other FABPs, FABP12 is a small cytosolic protein with a conserved beta-barrel structure, likely involved in lipid uptake, intracellular trafficking, and possibly related functions, though it remains less studied compared to other FABP family members[1][2][3]. There are currently no known therapeutic drugs interacting with FABP12, and it is not established as a clinical biomarker or direct therapeutic target. There is no evidence that FABP12 is currently considered a bona fide therapeutic target or drug target, nor is it associated with any approved drugs, disease biomarkers, or major disease roles as of now[1][2][3]. The molecule is mainly described in the context of basic protein family characterization and tissue distribution. FABP12’s function is best understood as part of the fatty acid trafficking and metabolism network, but its specific physiological and pathological roles require further research[2][3].
