Overview

A Fatty acid profile is a diagnostic and analytical assessment of the relative proportions and concentrations of various fatty acids within a biological sample, such as blood plasma or red blood cell membranes (Mayo Clinic Laboratories, 2024). It typically includes measurements of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), with a specific focus on omega-3 and omega-6 species which are critical for cardiovascular and inflammatory health (PubMed: PMID 31500331). While the profile itself is not a therapeutic target, it serves as a robust biomarker for metabolic state, dietary adherence, and disease risk. Alterations in this profile are closely linked to the development of atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and chronic systemic inflammation (National Institutes of Health, 2023). Pharmacological interventions like omega-3 supplements or fibrates are used to shift the profile toward a more cardioprotective state by influencing lipid metabolic pathways and gene expression (StatPearls, 2023). For biotech analysts, this 'target' should be treated as a clinical endpoint or biomarker rather than a single druggable protein or receptor.

Mechanism of action

Drugs do not target the 'profile' itself but modulate it by activating Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, or reducing hepatic VLDL synthesis (National Institutes of Health, 2023; StatPearls, 2023).
