Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is a large, multifunctional enzyme complex responsible for the de novo synthesis of long-chain saturated fatty acids, primarily palmitate (C16:0), from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA using NADPH as a reducing agent. It plays a central role in energy storage, membrane assembly and repair, and secretion of lipoprotein triglycerides. Overexpression or dysregulation of FAS has been linked to metabolic diseases and cancers, making it a potential therapeutic target.
