Fatty acid synthase I (FAS-I) is a large, multifunctional enzyme complex responsible for the de novo biosynthesis of long-chain saturated fatty acids, primarily palmitate (C16:0), from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA in the presence of NADPH. FAS-I plays a central role in cellular metabolism by providing essential components for membrane synthesis, energy storage, and signaling molecules. Overexpression or dysregulation has been linked to diseases such as cancer, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Many human cancers show elevated levels of FAS expression—making it an attractive target for anticancer therapies.
