Overview

FAU pseudogene 1 (FAUP1) is a processed pseudogene derived from the FAU gene, which encodes a ribosomal protein S30 fused with a ubiquitin-like domain. FAUP1 is transcriptionally silent, contains an intact but not expressed open reading frame of 137 codons, and is located on chromosome 18. It exists in an antisense orientation relative to a sequence homologous to the promoter of the islet amyloid polypeptide (amylin) gene. There is no evidence supporting that FAUP1 encodes a functional protein or has a recognized role as a therapeutic or diagnostic target. FAUP1 is not a gene product (e.g., receptor, enzyme, transporter), but rather a non-functional genomic remnant. The canonical, functional gene is FAU, not FAUP1. No associated drugs, mechanisms, or disease roles are described in the biomedical literature for this pseudogene. The gene is included in gene databases as a pseudogene with no known protein product or function.
